Dan Cole, President of the Charlotte Historical Society, will speak on William Marsh, Vermont Patriot and Loyalist. William Marsh was once a close confidante to the founders of Vermont, but ostracized after signing on General Burgoyne’s army during the British Invasion from Canada that culminated in the Battle of Saratoga. Why did Marsh do so? How did he affect the New Hampshire Grants’ pursuit of independent Statehood? How was he affected by the war? What was his relationship to Ethan and Ira Allen?
The answers to these questions help to answer a greater question: Can a person during the Revolution be a Vermont Patriot and not an American Patriot?
