It is with a real sense of loss that we share the news of Richard Sherman’s passing. Just last year he spent a couple of afternoons with Lauren Parren, identifying people in a stack of photos left behind by his cousin Charlie Weisenbach, a long-time citizen of Monkton. None of the photos had notations so without Richard’s help we wouldn’t have records in our collection of Charlie’s farm and the folks who were important to him. As we continue to try to tell the story of Monkton’s past we need this sort of documentation.
Fast forward to this weekend, when we met with Sharon George, who brought a large collection of memorabilia from her extended family. Once again the MMHS will be the richer for her efforts. We are happy to arrange for other private scanning sessions, and we’ll be hosting upcoming scanning evenings at the Town Hall in 2025.
This holiday season, please consider hauling out the old photos, whether they are in albums or boxes or stuffed into drawers, and get them labeled! Using #2 pencil, on the back, write the first and last names of the people (writing “Mom” won’t help future family members or historians), and include the date, the location or event depicted. It might be a fun pastime at family gatherings!
