Stephen Haight [1738-1825] settled in Barnumton before 1800. This Friends (Quaker) family was from Dutchess Co., NY. Stephen married twice, first to Lydia Allen, who was the mother of his children, and second to Keturah Baker, widow of William Robblee. Stephen is buried in the Friends Cemetery off Cemetery Road.
Stephen and Lydia, had a son Benjamin, who in turn had a son Stephen. This Stephen, sometimes called Stephen Jr., was a man of great repute during his era. “He was for many years a leading member of the Legislature, a sheriff, and a judge of the County Court. He died on the 12th of January, 1841, at Washington, D. C., aged fifty-eight years, while holding the office of sergeant-at-arms in the Senate of the United States. The body thereupon voted an appropriation to pay the expenses of carrying his remains to Burlington for burial.” (Source: History of Addison County, Vermont, H. P. Smith, ed. Syracuse, N. Y.; D. Mason & Co., 1886.)
This second Stephen married Anah Thomas. They lived in the house pictured above until moving to Burlington. The house is described as being about two miles north of the Eaton farm, which was just north of the New Haven line. This would be near where the school, the church and other homes were.
We are fortunate to have two interior views of the house, also taken by William Harrison Haight in 1927. Note the wallpapered ceiling in the first bedroom.
